Piper Jaffray’s September Mattress Retailer Survey provides an upbeat look at the bedding industry’s prospects. It says the industry enjoyed a “solid” September and notes that retailers see higher sales in the fourth quarter. Piper Jaffray conducts monthly surveys on sales performance and a number of other issues.

Its September survey said retailers reported a 3.6% mean increase in total dollar sales that month, “albeit with some modest deceleration from July/August.” Piper Jaffray’s August survey found retail sales up by a mean of 6.1%, while the July survey found retail sales up by a mean of 6.4%.

Total dollar sales for the third quarter were up by a mean of 4.1%, an improvement over the mean increase of 2.8% in the second quarter, Piper Jaffray said. Significantly, the firm said retailers see a better fourth quarter on the way.

“The outlook for Q4 is favorable, with 71% saying they expect Q4 sales growth to be better than Q3 sales growth,” Piper Jaffray said. Fourteen percent of the respondents said they expect fourth quarter sales to be the same compared to the third quarter, while another 14% of the respondents said they expect fourth quarter sales growth to be lower than in the third quarter.
